How to Choose a Colour Palette for Your Party: 3 Simple Ways to Style Your Gathering
Hey Hosting Queen,
Ah, spring… the world feels like it’s waking up again and showing off its colours.
The whites, greys, and blues of winter slowly give way to the soft yellows, pinks, and fresh greens of spring.
But what about your gatherings?
Do you ever feel inspired by the colours you see outdoors… yet struggle to translate that inspiration when it comes to styling your table or planning your next party?
You’re not alone.
As humans, we’re naturally drawn to colour. Certain colours pair beautifully together, while others help create a specific mood or atmosphere. When used intentionally, colour becomes one of the easiest ways to style a gathering that feels thoughtful, cohesive, and inviting.
If you’re not sure where to start, here are three simple ways to choose a colour palette for your next party.
1. Start With Your Theme
If your gathering has a theme, your colour palette can often flow naturally from it.
A garden party might lean into greens and soft florals.
A coastal dinner might feature blues and sandy neutrals.
A romantic celebration might include blush, ivory, and gold.
A simple formula that works beautifully is:
1 main colour + 1–2 supporting colours.
This keeps everything cohesive without feeling overwhelming.
2. Use Your Favourite Colour
Another easy way to create a palette is by starting with a colour you already love.
You can weave it throughout the gathering in subtle ways — through flowers, linens, napkins, candles, or even some of the food if you’re feeling adventurous.
For my daughter’s 18th birthday party, we hosted a Brown Party. Everything was brown — the dishes, tablecloths, décor, wrapping paper, food… even many of the guests arrived dressed in brown.
It was equal parts hilarious, creative, and memorable.
(That’s a story for another time.)
3. Look to the Season or Holiday
Sometimes the easiest inspiration comes from the season you’re already in.
Spring gatherings often feature soft pastels or gentle brights.
Easter tables might include blush, mint, or buttery yellow.
Thanksgiving naturally leans into warm golds, browns, and deep oranges.
Seasonal colours already feel familiar and comforting, which makes them a beautiful foundation for your gathering.
A Final Tip
Colour is meant to be fun — and it plays a powerful role in setting the mood of your gathering.
You can weave your palette throughout your space using:
• flowers
• table runners
• napkins
• candles
• dishes
• small décor accents
That said, most gatherings benefit from thoughtful bursts of colour rather than overwhelming amounts of it.
A cohesive palette tends to feel more elegant and inviting.
Of course… if bold, dramatic colour is the vibe you're going for — then by all means, go big or go home.
If you're still feeling stuck choosing colours or figuring out how to bring everything together, you're not alone.
