DIY Host Burnout: How to Avoid Missing Your Own Party
Hey Hosting Queen,
So… that happened…
The guests had a wonderful time. The weather was beautiful and the food was amazing.
But…
I was so tired and busy the entire night that by the time I finally sat down to enjoy my party, the guests started leaving because it was getting late.
I missed my own party. 😭
After that night I said never again.
Has that ever happened to you?
That experience taught me a few lessons. I started looking at the parts of the process where I had gotten stuck, and then created a plan to make future gatherings run more smoothly.
Here’s what I came up with:
Eat Before the Guests Arrive
Have a quick, filling meal before everyone shows up.
That way you can focus on greeting guests, refilling food, and enjoying conversations without constantly getting up between bites.
(This works best for larger buffet-style parties — not formal dinner parties.)
Ask for Help
You don’t have to do everything yourself.
For me, help looked like:
• Getting the tents, tables, and chairs set up outside
• Asking 2–3 people in advance to help with cleanup
Plan Ahead
A few small preparations can make a big difference.
• Set out leftover containers in advance so no one has to search through cupboards
• Have extra dish towels ready
• Clear counters of unnecessary clutter and put away clean dishes before the party begins
Don’t Over-Cater
Serve what you planned to serve.
If you weren’t planning to offer coffee after dinner at a summer barbecue, it’s perfectly okay to say no.
This is a party — not a restaurant.
(That night I did make coffee for one person who insisted… and she only drank half the cup anyway. 😑)
Guide the Flow of Guests
A few small adjustments can help keep things running smoothly.
• Keep people out of the kitchen if you’re working in there
• Lock the front door if the party is in the backyard
• Put up a simple sign directing guests to the backyard
Lessons learned.
And if you’ve ever felt like you missed your own party, maybe a few of these lessons will help you enjoy your next gathering a little more.
And if you’d like help figuring out your own hosting friction points — and what to do about them — a 1 Hour Plan Like a Queen session might be exactly what you need.
