Do You Have to Match Everything for a Party?

April 22, 20262 min read

Hey Hosting Queen,

When you have a party to host, what’s your first thought?

Something I see often when people start thinking about decor is buying the “decor sets” from the dollar store or party supply store. While yes, everything technically goes together, these sets can sometimes fall flat — or even look a bit tacky and chaotic.

And we definitely don’t want that.

You’ve probably seen them, been to a party that used them, or maybe even used them yourself. The plastic pink tablecloths, the thin pink paper plates, the cheap plastic pink forks, and probably pink balloons that say It’s a Girl!

Now don’t get me wrong — I love a good themed party. But these decor sets can end up feeling a little too matchy-matchy. And when you add in character themes, the whole thing can quickly start to feel cluttered or overwhelming.

So what are you supposed to do?

You’re not a designer, and you want this to be as easy as possible.

The good news is: you don’t have to match everything.

But coordinating? That’s where the magic happens.

Here are a few ways to make your decor feel more elevated and intentional:

Add contrast
Use different shades and tones rather than everything being the exact same colour.

Play with texture
Mix materials like linen, wood, glass, or woven elements to add visual interest.

Use flowers instead of balloons
Even artificial flowers have come a long way and can add a beautiful touch.

Choose a theme
Let the theme guide your decisions, but weave it through subtly so everything still feels cohesive.

Incorporate natural elements
Greenery, wood, or simple florals can soften the overall look.

Use characters sparingly
A cake topper or themed napkins are often more than enough.

Think outside the box
Repurpose items in creative ways that support your gathering.

Trick the eye with details
For example, slightly mismatched white tablecloths can still look intentional if you repeat the same centerpiece on each table.

So you see, you can style your gathering in a way that still reflects your theme — without everything feeling overly matched or flat.

Creating a coordinated experience for guests is one of my favourite parts of party planning.
