How to Create a Mood Board for Your Party
Hey Hosting Queen,
You’ve probably seen mood boards in style magazines or on a fashion designer’s desk — but did you know they can also help make your party feel more elevated and cohesive?
Maybe you’ve never even heard of a mood board before — and that’s okay. By the end of this read, you’ll have a much better idea of what they are and how they can help with party planning.
A mood board is simply a place where you gather pictures, colours, textures, fabrics, or anything else that inspires the look and feel of your party. Seeing everything together helps you visualize how all the elements will work as a whole.
You can easily create a mood board in Canva (for free), build a Pinterest board, or go old-school and cut pictures from magazines.
Creating one doesn’t need to take long. You can usually put one together in less than an hour.
Here’s a simple way to do it:
• Gather all your ideas
• Edit and remove anything that doesn’t fit
• Adjust things until it feels right
I create a mood board for every client party I plan. For my own gatherings, I often already see it in my head — though for larger parties I’ll still make one.
And don’t stress, Queen — you don’t have to create a mood board for every party.
They’re simply a helpful tool that adds visual clarity and acts like a style guide for your gathering. Plus, they’re actually fun to make.
Just so you can picture how this works, here’s an example of a pretend party mood board. (Though if you love the idea, you’re more than welcome to borrow it 😉)
Theme: Lavender Fields
Colours: Shades of purple
Texture: Purple gingham, sea grass
Flowers: Lavender, purple hyacinth, white and purple pansies
Decor: Purple table runner, sea grass placemats, purple napkins, white dishes
Food: Purple grapes, lavender lemonade, purple coleslaw
