You know those wonderful evenings when it’s warm, the days are longer, and it finally feels good to be outside again?

The birds are singing, there’s the smell of barbecue and flowers in the air… oh, it’s lovely. 🥰🌞

Backyard parties — big or small — are one of my favourite things to plan. They naturally have a more relaxed and laid-back vibe (though they still benefit from a little planning ahead).

Here are a few tips to help make your next outdoor gathering a success:

🌸 Shade — trees, umbrellas, or shade tents
🌸 Blankets — evenings can get chilly once the sun goes down
🌸 Ice — have plenty for both drinks and food
🌸 Bug Spray — your guests will thank you
🌸 Outdoor Games — frisbee, badminton, or bocce ball are always a hit (bubbles for little kids!)
🌸 Screen Tent — keep food protected from bugs, or serve food from inside the house
🌸 Tables & Chairs — you can also invite guests to bring their own camp chairs
🌸 Side Tables — helpful spots for guests to place drinks or plates
🌸 Lights for After Dark — fairy lights or glow sticks for the kids
🌸 Cooler — keep it under the food table for easy restocking of drinks or food
🌸 Garbage & Recycling — keeping local regulations in mind
🌸 Fire Pit & S’mores — if allowed in your area (always follow local burn permit rules)

These are all things I’ve included at many of my backyard gatherings.

Guests love it when you’ve “thought of everything,” and it creates the perfect opportunity for everyone to relax and enjoy being outside together.
