The Brown Party: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at a Creative Theme Party
Hey Hosting Queen,
It all started when my cousin casually said, “You could even make brown look nice.”
Challenge accepted.
My daughter and I immediately started thinking about how we could make brown beautiful—and honestly, we had so many good ideas (and a lot of fun pulling it all together). It was her 18th birthday, and it came together even better than expected. If you're wondering how to choose colours for your own gathering, check out my blog on How to Choose a Colour Palette for Your Party: 3 Simple Ways to Style Your Gathering.
Here’s what my cousin was probably imagining:
Kraft paper roll for a tablecloth (like at a steakhouse)
Scratchy brown paper napkins
Brown compostable paper plates
Nothing wrong with simple—but we wanted to elevate it.
Here’s what we actually did:
🤎 Sent out brown-themed invitations
🤎 Used a chocolate brown cloth tablecloth (already in my closet)
🤎 Found brown dishes on a discount sale (they’re now our fall/Thanksgiving dishes too)
🤎 Created a brown-themed menu: teriyaki chicken, baked potatoes, chocolate cake…
🤎 Added gold disposable cutlery and brown-and-gold balloons from the party store
🤎 Invited guests to dress in brown—and they delivered
🤎 Used brown striped and polka dot gift wrap
Take a look at how everything turned out:

It was a fantastic evening. Everyone was amazed at how we really did make brown beautiful.
We STILL talk about the Brown Party 🤎
I love a good theme party, and I’d love to help you pull off yours.
