5 Tips for Keeping Gatherings Relaxed and Fun with Kids
Hey Hosting Queen,
Ah, summer… Have you ever noticed that time seems to slow down in the summer? Longer days, relaxed meals outside, and evenings that seem to stretch on forever. (Of course, the opposite can be true too. If your summer is filled with vacations, family gatherings, and weddings, you might wonder where the “dog days of summer” went!)
Wherever your summer plans take you, chances are some of your gatherings will include children. And honestly,<<First Name>>? Kids can add so much fun and energy to a party.
Over the years, I've hosted many successful gatherings with my own children and plenty of other little guests too. Trying to entertain everyone can leave you exhausted. Learn how to avoid host burnout and actually enjoy your own gathering.
Here are a few simple things I've learned that help everyone have a more relaxed time.
1. Involve Kids in the Prep
Give children special, age-appropriate jobs like:
Cushion Handler
Drink Station Attendant
Napkin Setter
Bubble Distributor
Kids love feeling included, and giving them ownership often helps them stay engaged during the gathering.
You can even let them have a say in part of the menu or decor if it suits your event.
2. Have Games & Activities Ready
Simple activities go a long way:
Nerf football
Frisbee
Bocce ball
Badminton
Cornhole toss
Bubbles
If possible, set these activities up away from the food area and visiting adults so everyone has space to enjoy themselves.
3. Create Easy Stations
Stations help guests help themselves and keep you from answering the same questions all afternoon.
Consider setting up:
A drink station
Bug repellent and first aid station
Bubble and glow stick station
S'mores station
For drinks, I often buy several cases of flavoured sparkling water. Guests love the variety and there's no sugar crash later.
4. Use Good Quality Paper Plates
For larger gatherings with children, disposable plates can make cleanup much easier.
Just be sure to choose sturdy, good-quality options. Many paper products can also be recycled or composted depending on your local regulations.
5. Serve Buffet Style
Buffets work beautifully for family-friendly gatherings.
Offer a few kid-friendly choices alongside options for adults, but keep it simple.
And don't forget fruit and veggie trays. They disappear every single time at my parties — even with the kids!
Including children doesn't have to make hosting stressful. With a little planning, they can be part of what makes your gathering memorable and fun.
