How to Host a Multigenerational Gathering Everyone Will Enjoy
Hey Hosting Queen,
So, you're hosting the annual family picnic this year. I bet you're feeling a little frazzled trying to figure out how to make it enjoyable for everyone.
It might seem like a challenge to keep both your 8-year-old nephew and your 88-year-old grandma happy at the same event, but it's actually much easier than you might think.
As I mentioned in last week's post, there are a few simple things that help everyone feel comfortable and included:
☀️ An easy make-ahead menu served buffet style
☀️ Plenty of drinks
☀️ Shady places to sit
☀️ An area for adults to visit
☀️ Self-led activities for the kids (away from the adults and the food)
☀️ Chairs, cushions, and blankets
☀️ Sunscreen, bug spray, and a simple first aid station
☀️ Easy access to bathrooms
One thing I've noticed over the years is that older adults and parents are often perfectly happy to sit, visit, and enjoy the gathering while the kids play nearby. I've also seen plenty of dads get pulled into a game of catch, bocce ball, or frisbee with the children — so everyone wins.
The simpler you can make it, the more everyone seems to enjoy it.
While bouncy castles and face painting can be fun additions (and sometimes work really well), you also don't want several overstimulated, sugar-fuelled kids crashing your party halfway through the afternoon.
I've found that keeping the gathering relatively loose and unstructured works best. Now, that doesn't mean you skip the planning phase. You still need your lists, preparation, and organization beforehand. But once guests arrive, the gathering should feel relaxed and effortless.
And if you're hosting a larger crowd but have a tiny backyard — or simply don't want your prize-winning flowers accidentally trampled — consider using a local park or community centre instead. Many already have playgrounds, splash pads, washrooms, picnic shelters, and plenty of space for guests to spread out.
I do love a good multi-generational backyard party. They're one of my favourite types of gatherings to plan.
