How to Plan a Relaxed Milestone Birthday Celebration: Dad's 70th Birthday Party
Hey Hosting Queen,
I love a good backyard party. And my backyard has seen plenty of them over the years. Here in Canada, our summers are so short that you have to make the most of them. Many hosts overcomplicate milestone celebrations. Here's where DIY hosts often get stuck—and how to keep things simple instead.
One backyard party in particular was my dad's 70th birthday.
My dad isn't a fan of a lot of "hoopla," so we kept things simple and relaxed. There were about 20 guests — friends of my parents along with some family members too.
We settled on an easy, crowd-pleasing menu of hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixings, of course.
To keep things running smoothly, I followed the same framework I use for every gathering:
🎉 Planning with lists, lists, and more lists
🎉 Preparing as much as possible in advance
🎉 Setting up the party so that I could enjoy it too

Everyone had a lovely time, and the weather couldn't have been more perfect.
My dad felt truly honoured, especially when a few surprise guests arrived. Many of the guests were older and some had travelled a fair distance to be there, so the party naturally wrapped up around 7:30 or 8:00 PM.
Guests began arriving around 4:00 PM, spending time catching up, greeting my dad, and visiting with one another. By 5:00 PM, all of the food was ready to go.
Along with the burgers and hot dogs, we served salads, watermelon, cookies, and of course, birthday cake.
One of my favourite details was having some of my dad's favourite music playing softly from a speaker in the food tent. It added just the right atmosphere without taking over the conversation.
The real secret to this party, though, was keeping things moving while still allowing the evening to feel relaxed and unscheduled. There was no rigid timeline, no pressure, and no complicated agenda. Everyone simply enjoyed being together.
Having a shorter evening helped too. Guests were able to enjoy themselves fully and still head home when they were ready.
Sometimes the best milestone celebrations aren't the biggest or the fanciest. They're the ones where people feel welcomed, comfortable, and genuinely happy to be there.
So, what milestone celebrations do you have coming up?
I'd love to help make them as enjoyable and stress-free as this one was. I offer two levels of in-person planning support in the Ottawa area.
